Moving Packing Tips

If you decide to pack yourself, it's important you do it right to ensure your valuables stay safe.

Things you'll need:

  • Tissue paper
  • Packing paper (plain newsprint)
  • 2" packing tape
  • Masking tape
  • A box cutter
  • Scissors
  • Permanent markers
  • Professional quality boxes

Tips for an Easy Transition:

  • Follow a time line. People frequently underestimate how long it takes to pack.
  • Start with items you won't need right away, like things in storage and holiday items.
  • As you complete a room, sort packed boxes by weight (light, medium, heavy) to make loading easier.
  • Limit boxes to a max weight of 50 pounds
  • Provide cushioning by packing crumpled newsprint in the bottom of boxes
  • Wrap all fragile, breakable items in paper before packing them
  • Use only sturdy boxes and don't over stuff. Be sure to tape seams securely.
  • Label boxes clearly. Include your last name, room where the box should go, and a description of the contents.

What not to pack:

  • Nail polish remover
  • Paints and paint thinners
  • Lighter fluid
  • Gasoline
  • Fireworks
  • Oxygen bottles
  • Propane cylinders
  • Automotive repair and maintenance chemicals
  • Radio-pharmaceuticals
  • Matches
  • Other items not recommended for transport on the van include:
    • Firearms
    • Family photos
    • Food in glass jars and perishables
    • Prescription drugs needed for immediate use
