Moving Check List

Eight Weeks Before Your Move

  • Contact your moving specialist to make arrangements for moving day.
  • Pack items that are in storage and holiday items you wont need.
  • Start to use up things you can't move, like frozen foods and cleaning supplies.

Six Weeks Before Your Move

  • Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
  • Locate motor vehicle registration and licensing documents.
  • If you need items to be stored, make the necessary arrangements now (Link to storage section.)

Four Weeks Before Your Move

  • Submit a change of address form to the post office.
  • Arrange transportation for your pets and plants.
  • Contact utility companies to disconnect services.
  • Plan a garage sale to get rid of items you don't want to move.

Three Weeks Before Your Move

  • Make travel arrangements and reservations for your moving trip.
  • Collect important papers and documents.
  • Arrange to close accounts at your local bank and open accounts in your new locale.

Two Weeks Before Your Move

  • Have your car serviced for the trip.
  • Contact your moving specialist to review and confirm all arrangements for your move.

One Week Before Your Move

  • Take pets to the veterinarian for any needed immunizations. Get copies of pets' veterinary records.
  • Drain gas and oil from power equipment.

Two to Three Days Before Your Move

  • Defrost your freezer and refrigerator.
  • Disconnect and prepare major appliances for the move.
  • Pack a box of personal items that will be needed immediately at your new home. Take this box with you in the car.
  • Contact your Compass Moving Specialist to confirm moving time and discuss last minute details.

On Your Moving Day

  • Make sure that someone is at home to answer the van foreman's questions.
  • Record your utility meter readings (gas, electric, water).
